I never played Shogun, but I can tell you that Medieval is far and away my favorite. WITH mods. There's two particularly good ones.
Broken Crescent, which you don't need the expansion to download and is based around the part of the world from Byzantium to Rajasthan--really detailed, at that--and is practically made from scratch, too.
and
Stainless Steel, which requires the expansion but has huge unit overhauls and tosses in a bunch of factions. The map is huge too.
Both provide a lot of improvement to AI and battle quality, but my only gripe with Medieval is that the "vanilla" version is crap once you get the mods. They totally overhaul the quality of the game.

My game I used to play tons online was Star Wars Galaxies. When they screwed it up with the "New Game Enhancements" a few years ago, I quit playing. Every once in a while, I'll log in for a month just to catch up with my old guild and see what's changed, but just don't have the same commitment to play like I used to. They ruined it for me. Lots of good memories of playing with my friend Will though.

Yet somehow it wouldn't surprise me, given how KOTOR became less awesome with the second game...

Well even SOE has finally admitted they made a huge mistake with the NGE and doesn't intend on making them again. I also don't blame the makers of KOTOR 2, because it was forced released before they could really finish it properly. Not their fault they were put under such pressure. I do however believe there is a fan project in the works to "finish" the game by adding back in a lot of the material that was left out/incomplete due to time constraints. KOTOR 2 Restoration Project. It looks kinda promising. I just now thought to look it up, as before I had only been told about it. I'll haveta go buy an old copy of KOTOR 2 on PC so I can get it. www.team-gizka.org/

Warhammer is f*cking awesome, man. I'm loving every second of it. My friends and I made new characters today since there was a snafu about which servers we were going to play on, then rolled together. We did normal quests and s*** until level 3, and then one of my buds was like, "Why don't we do some PvP?" So we got in a queue for Khaine's Embrace (scenario/battleground), got in, and ended up fighting people much higher level than us... and winning handily. It was awesome. So we did that for a while, got to level 6, then did a few quests to hit us at 7, then did a few more scenarios - Nordenwatch being the best, we came in late and the score was not in our favor, we were 200 behind in a 500-point maximum. But we pulled it together with the other people in there, rallied, and caught up to the enemies at about 400. Then we had it cinched, and kept going to 500 for the win. I don't think we lost one scenario today, leveled like maniacs in a very fun PvP environment.

I would like to play with you sometime, but I don't usually get into PvP stuff to much. Don't know why.

It's really easy to get into PvP in the game, I mean really easy. Make a character, click to join a Scenario queue, and go about your business. When one starts that you can join it asks you if you want to join, if you do, you are teleported to the Scenario. When it finishes, you are teleported right back where you were.
We're currently playing Order on Badlands, I'm guessing we'll go with Destruction on Ironfist.
And now I have to finish editing 10 pages of writing before noon so I can get this in and get my commission. Bah.
