Why do people fail to realize what it means when your backyard is surrounded by one? Is there some place in the world where a fence means "Welcome all, please jump on over!" or something?

People with fences ask for that s***.
It's like putting a 'do not steal from' sign on a piggy bank or something.

Well, the next time those pricks living in the apartments behind us try to use our yard as a short-cut to the gas station, they're going to be in for a nasty surprise...

Did you set thumb tacks down all around your fence? No. We just smothered it in grease. And we've already found one pair of handprints on it, too, so we know the surprise has been discovered. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

Our second line of fence-defense consists of two cans of paint, a blowtorch, and a bb gun. ;D

Screw it, put up a "No Trespassing" then set a bunch of bear traps around the edge of the fence in your yard.

That actually IS an option, if our fence gets busted.

No, but we can probably get some easily enough.
In all seriousness, though, we don't actually want to hurt any of these idiots; we just want them to stop jumping our fence, both because it's disrespectful and apparently they're heavy enough that it's causing our fence to get bent.

You can get No Trespassing signs from just about anywhere. Wal-Mart, Lowe's, Home Depot, etc. It doesn't actually stop anyone from coming on your property, but it does give you a lot more legal rights towards dealing with them. ...In all seriousness, though, we don't actually want to hurt any of these idiots.. Well there's your problem right there.

We might just end up getting a sign, but I think the grease is going to work better than any sign we put up. I mean, you can ignore a sign, but getting grease all over your hands is a bit of an annoyance.
Oh, and a funny little story that exhibits the basic attitude of these people is as follows:
A new family moved into a house a few homes down that didn't have a fence. The guy who moved in decided to put one up, though, so he set about doing so as soon as they had finished unpacking. Now, between the apartments and the houses on our street is a ditch, and one day while this guy was at work on his backyard fence a few guys from the apartments came walking down the ditch. When they approached the guy, they actually asked him where he was going to put the gate so that they could continue to cut across his yard with ease.
