Car + Can of Soda + Heat = BOOM!
This is what I learned today.
Anyone else ever left a soda in your car only to come back later in the day to find that it had exploded?

nope...usually if I'm driving and have a soda not completely drunk by the time I get home I take it in with me

I took it with me in the morning yesterday 'cause I thought I might need a pick-me-up during the hour long trip to school, as I leave the house at 5:30 AM, but I ended up forgetting about it.

I'm assuming it was unopen, yes?
I guess I can see how the heat would build pressure in it and make the can explode.

Yeah, it was unopened.
And I know heat can cause a can of soda to explode; I just figured you'd need the heat of a fire or something to do it. Plus, it wasn't even all that hot today. I've left unopened sodas and such in my car on previous occasions during much hotter days, yet this is the first time I've seen this happen.

Also, when i say "exploded", I don't mean as in a huge, shrapnel-goes-everywhere explosion. It just blew a hole through the top of the can and apparently caused the can to jump, as I found it lying on the floorboard rather than in the cup-holder where it had been previously. So, I'm sure I'd have been fine even if I had been in the car; I just would have had a nasty surprise and a reason to curse like a sailor.

this begs the question of what was the temperature where you live

Well it would have been hotter in his car regardless of the temperature, especially if he has black or dark colored interior.

The high today was 85 degrees.
And it wasn't all that hot inside my car when I got inside. I mean, the steering wheel wasn't even all that warm.

In that case, let me put a can of soda under my little brother's bed. Then, when I give you the signal, make it explode so that the little snot gets a big surprise next time I hear him plowing his fiance during the middle of the day. ;D

I think I'm even going to keep that can, too, as a souvenir for how random life can be at times.

Ew, yeah, I didn't even think about that. It's probably really sticky around that area.

It wasn't bad. Took a few paper towels to sop up all of the soda, though. And I was going to clean the inside of my car this weekend anyways, so this just gives me more reason to do so.
