First Round Results:
1.Colin Quinn eliminates Joe Piscopo, 8-1. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.
2. Steve Martin eliminates Tom Hanks, 5-4! This is the kind of spontaneous publicity he needs!
3. Norm MacDonald eliminates Dana Carvey, 6-2. Well, isn't that special?
4. Tracy Morgan eliminates Gilda Radner, 5-0. To help him celebrate, you should get him a soda, BITCH!
Welcome to Match Numero, uh...Five-o...
EDDIE MURPHY joined SNL as part of the New Cast for the 1980-81 season. When that season tanked, everyone was fired...except Eddie (and Joe Piscopo, but he already lost in this tournament, so whatever). Eddie would stay with the show until February of 1984, but came back to host in December that same year. He also hosted once in 1982, making him the first person to host the show while still a castmember on it! During his tenure with the show, Eddie created characters like Mr. Robinson, an inner city counterpart to Mr. Rogers, an adult version of Buckwheat (from the "Our Gang" shorts), Velvet Jones, a pimp who put out commercials for his own romance novels and a course on how to become a ho, a hybrid of Little Richard and Richard Simmons (dubbed Little Richard Simmons, obviously), and Gumby as an old Jewish man. He also performed impressions, like James Brown (having a Celebrity Hot Tub Party), Mr. T, Jesse Jackson, Stevie Wonder, and Bruce Lee. He's even worn elaborate makeup and exposed the secret world of white people. Eddie has his own "Best of" DVD.
Eddie's worked quite a bit with SNL alumni, including Dan Aykroyd in the classic Trading Places, Mike Myers in the Shrek series, Gilbert Gottfried and Chris Rock (briefly) in Beverly Hills Cop II, Norm MacDonald in Dr. Dolittle, and frequent SNL host Steve Martin in Bowfinger. He's also worked extensively with Eddie Murphy, in films like Coming to America, The Nutty Professor, and Norbit...try not to hold that last one against him.
DARRELL HAMMOND joined the cast of SNL for the 1995-96 season, and has hung around for 14 seasons (setting the record for most seasons on the show). Rumors seem to suggest that the 2008-09 season was his last, but who knows? At any rate, Hammond made his name on SNL as a master impressionist, performing 105 impressions (which is the record for impressions on the show), including among them the wildly popular Sean Connery, Bill Clinton, and Dick Cheney. He's also performed impressions of Al Gore, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Billy Bob Thornton (really a parody of his Sling Blade character), Donald Trump, Dr. Phil, Jesse Jackson, Phil Donahue, Richard Dreyfuss (auditioning for the role of C-3PO), and Walt Disney, among others...and others...and others. Hammond had a "Best Of" TV special, making him the first person to have one of those while still a castmember. The special has yet to be released on DVD. Hammond also holds the record for saying the line "Live from New York, It's Saturday Night!" more times than anyone else in the show's history.
Hammond's work outside SNL includes a small part in Celtic Pride with Dan Aykroyd and Damon Wayans, a role in Blues Brothers 2000, a role in Shortcut to Happiness with Amy Poehler and Alec Baldwin, and playing Capt. Jack Swallows in Epic Movie...try not to hold that last one against him.
