We go now from a match-up of obscure SNL alumni to a match featuring an all-time great castmember and an all-time great host...
PHIL HARTMAN joined the SNL cast in the fall of 1986, and stayed with the show for 8 seasons. Hartman would come back to host the show twice in 1996 (the second half of one season, and the first half of the next season). Phil's most famous characters on the show include the Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer, the Anal-Retentive Chef, and Frankenstein. Some of Phil's best-loved impressions include Ed McMahon, Charlton Heston, Bill Clinton, Frank Sinatra, and Phil Donahue. "The Best of Phil Hartman" is available on DVD.
Phil's credits beyond SNL include appearance's on Pee-Wee's Playhouse, voice acting as Lionel Hutz and Troy McClure on The Simpsons, and roles in films such as Sgt. Bilko with Steve Martin and Dan Aykroyd, Jingle All the Way with Laraine Newman, Chris Parnell, and Jim Belushi, and Small Soldiers with Jay Mohr, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer.
CHRISTOPHER WALKEN has hosted SNL 7 times, the first in 1990 and the most recent in 2008. Over the course of his hosting duties, Walken has played The Continental, a pervert who tries to behave like a classy man-of-the-world, and he's re-visited his character Max Zorin from A View to a Kill. He's sung about the Boulevard of Broken Balls, and he's helped bring newfound fame to the cowbell. He's declared his infatuation with Mango, and with making love to a woman's ear canal. He's interviewed a centaur looking for work, and he's played Colonel Angus, whose name and adventures sound similar to sex acts. Walken's best sketches have been compiled onto digital video disc, as well.
Walken's non-SNL works are many, some notables include Batman Returns with frequent SNL host Danny DeVito, Catch Me If You Can with Tom Hanks, Blast from the Past, Suicide Kings with Jay Mohr, Joe Dirt with David Spade, Envy with Ben Stiller, and Balls of Fury with David Koechner. And yeah, I know he's famous for more serious roles, like in The Deer Hunter or The Dead Zone, but I'm trying to focus on the comedic stuff here.
