Ok, so I've been doing some looking into things, and I'm trying to figure out just what kind of a character Deadpool is really supposed to be. Is he a hardass anti-hero a la Riddick from PITCH BLACK? Or is he a practical joker in the vein of such never-serious folks like Ambush Bug?
Is he both at the same time? I mean, I've seen some pretty heavy Deadpool storylines in my research, and from what I had been lead to believe about the character, these are not the norm for him.
So what is up with him? Is he just not written consistently or what?

Yeah I think it depends on who is writing for him, and what their preference is.
I prefer sarcastic practical joker Deadpool, because do we really need another hardass anti-hero in the Marvel universe?

He really is both. His personality is kind of split because of the way his brain works. The thing is, even when he's a hardass he's still cracking wise. He may seem to be "never serious" like Ambush Bug, but the best way to put it is there IS a method to his madness.

Yeah, one of the storylines I read about had him killing some guy named Francis....and Deadpool is going "I really DON'T want to kill you Francis...." while he's DROWNING the guy in a lake. Another one had him abusing and beating Blind Al and locking her in a room with sharp objects as punishment for some sort of PERCIEVED betrayal. He also kicked Weasel's ass in that same storyline. Why so serious, Merc With A Mouth? One of the writers of that arc also commented that Wilson is only as heroic as he has to be, and usually wouldn't care about saving innocents unless there's something to be gained for him. I think that person's point was that Wilson is just NOT hero material....at least, he hasn't been yet. He fails at it every time he tries it.... And after I read that, I'm going, "HUH?" cause I thought, even though Wilson is NOT a nice guy....that he USUALLY sided with the angels instead of the demons. What am I missing here? More importantly, where should I start reading first to best understand DP?

Deadpool's books over the years have been about him trying to become a better person basically. He still kills, but trys to keep it to people that are within the realm of people that deserve to die.
Not nessacarily like The Punisher though. It's kind of like. If you came up to him and tried to offer him money to kill someone, and it ended up being some family man that did NOTHING to no one and you just thought it would be funny to see someone die, DP would probably end up not killing that guy and coming back after you.
If you hired him to kill a doctor that works on mob bosses exclusivly, but outside of that doesn't really do anything illegal, he'd probably kill him.
Deadpool, when he first showed up in the early 90's was mean as s*** and was 100% a bad guy. He was a mean killing machine that didn't give a s*** about anyone since his release from Weapon X.
Weasel is like his friend and his punching bag. For instance, DP wouldn't kill Weasel, but he probably would shot him in the legs for eating the last of the Doritos... HULK...
He will use a lot of scare tactics to. DP isn't nessacarily a hero, but he's not a villain either. It's complicated man. lol
Best thing to do it make sure you read the stories in order because his character really evolves over time, and he does get a lot more hero-ish in more recent books.

Kind of want to see A Punisher Deadpool team up. Me too....and thanks for the explanation, DP. It helps to know it's a continually evolving thing, rather than a character that simply cannot decide what he it wants to be. Hmmm.....a Punisher/DP team up, written by Garth Ennis. Now THAT has potential to be something TRULY entertaining.

That wouldn't be the first time either. Deadpool #4 in April '97 featured the Hulk, including DP cracking on him about Hulk Hogan.

Once in 'Pools main series and just a month or two ago in a mini-series called Deadpool: Suicide Kings

Yeah, Castle usually doesn't tolerate "spandex wearing freaks" very well. But it would be fun to see him HAVE to, like if he and Pool were put in a sort of DIE HARD WITH A VENGEANCE type scenario.

I haven't read the end of Suicide Kings, but that seems to be where they are going R-Man. With DP being framed for something, Punisher is coming after him, but I can't imagine them not teaming up to take out the real killer.
